Spring Cleaning for Your Appliances

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home—and your appliances. At Appliance Professional, we’re here to help you get the most out of your kitchen and laundry equipment with a few simple seasonal maintenance tips. These steps can help your appliances run more efficiently, last longer, and keep your home safer.

Refrigerator & Freezer Care

A clean refrigerator isn’t just about appearances—it’s about food safety and performance.

  • Clean the condenser coils: Dusty coils force your fridge to work harder, increasing energy use and wear. Use a coil brush or vacuum to gently clean them every 6–12 months.
  • Replace the water filter: If your fridge dispenses water or makes ice, swap the filter every 6 months to ensure clean, fresh-tasting water.
  • Wipe down the interior: Remove expired items, clean shelves with warm soapy water, and deodorize with a baking soda solution. Even if you keep your fridge clean throughout the year, you might be surprised by how much gunk is lurking in the corners and crevices.

Regular cleaning helps prevent odors, keeps food fresh, and reduces the risk of foodborne illness.

Washer & Dryer Maintenance

Your laundry appliances work hard—give them a little TLC to keep them running smoothly.

  • Clean the lint filter and dryer interior: Remove lint after every load and periodically vacuum inside the dryer drum to prevent buildup.
  • Dryer vent cleaning: Lint buildup in vents is a leading cause of house fires. We recommend professional vent cleaning at least once a year. If you notice longer drying times or excess heat, it may be time for cleaning. Call our friends at Vent Pros for fast, professional service.
  • Run a washer cleaning cycle: Use affresh® or a similar cleaner monthly to remove detergent residue and prevent odors.
  • Keep the door open: for front-load washers, keep the door open anytime it’s not in use to help the door boot dry and prevent mildew from growing. It’s even better to periodically wipe it down to remove any residue that can hold moisture.
  • Inspect hoses and gas lines: Replace washer fill hoses every 3–5 years and flexible gas lines every 5–10 years or with appliance replacement to prevent leaks.

These steps enhance safety, improve efficiency, and extend the life of your appliances.

Oven & Cooktop Refresh

A clean cooking area ensures better performance and tastier meals and – just as importantly – a more pleasant cooking experience.

  • Skip the self-clean cycle unless your oven is newer and in good shape: While it can be effective, the high heat may cause failures in door locks, thermal fuses, or control boards—especially in older ovens. Instead, use a baking soda paste or a gentle cleaner like.
  • Deep clean the cooktop: For glass or ceramic surfaces, use a non-abrasive cleaner like affresh® to remove spills and stains. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the surface.
  • Clean the oven door glass: Use a glass cleaner or a vinegar solution to keep the window clear, allowing you to monitor your cooking without opening the door.

Regular cleaning prevents odors, ensures even cooking, and maintains the appearance of your appliances.

Dishwasher & Garbage Disposal

Fortunately, neither your dishwasher nor your garbage disposal require much maintenance, but you’ll get better performance and a longer life out of them with these tips.

  • Clean your dishwasher’s filter: Your dishwasher recirculates water through a screen filter. If that filter is dirty and clogged, your dishwasher has to work harder to pump the water and won’t be able to produce as powerful of a spray. Simply rinse it out and use your fingers or a sponge to remove the buildup.
  • Clean the dishwasher: Use affresh® or a similar cleaner regularly or as needed to remove residue and prevent odors, even in places you can’t see like inside the pumps and hoses.

  • Garbage disposals are even easier: you can use an affresh® tab or similar cleaner to clean out buildup and gunk as needed.
